Automaton Alive

Oct 26 9PM

$10 Online pre-sale

$15 Door

Automaton Alive is a performance that deciphers the saga of the last child on earth "CC" who believes that the tear is the ingredient to cook the soup of reincarnation.

Artist Bio: Lane Shi is a Chinese born interactive multi-media performer and sound artist residing in Brooklyn, New York. Graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2016, she has been on 8 tours including a 14-city China tour, 7 U.S tours with Boston experimental band Dent and Elizabeth Colour Wheel. She started her solo project under the artist name Otay:onii, devoting fully to mountain chest singing in different languages and dialects, theatrical performing, and multi-media interactive art. It is her calling to hold passion, creativity and sensitivity close to her heart, and express them in ways that birth honest and impactful interactions.

Longer Description of Automaton Alive:

Automaton Alive is a performance art piece that tells the saga of last world child “CC”, who shed a teardrop over the destroyed and collapsed concrete ashed land and homes of earth, and return the color of it when the tear landed in its own place once called home. The performance consists of 3 episodes: crumble, a returning of, the day of. These 3 episodes are constructed with samples, theme song written and played live, projection mapping of the visual element of the story, and the movements and singing phrases of CC in its automaton form.

It would be unjustified to not mention that Automaton Alive is the third epilogue of the 8 year project {A Returning of a One That Must be Loved} (2015-2022), in which 8 paintings, in details decipher the story of the last day of the world, would be "hidden" in selected 8 countries. The meaning of tears in homes symbolized emotions in honesty from the character “CC”, and the tears in the saga is the last ingredient for the world to return after the end. During the traveling, samples and sounds would be field recorded and collected to produce the music piece that would be the theme song of these 8 paintings. At the end of 2022, clues of destinations would announce those who are going to find the paintings, and the meeting would be held with all the travelers who bring back the painting, rewarded with a copy of the finished production of the theme song which won’t be released anywhere else.

Registration will close and the tournament will start promptly at 8:30PM, so don’t be late!

ABOUT THE GAME

Witchball is a post-reality racing game played by children in the year 2601. Massive environmental change has made much of the world inaccessible, and long-distance travel impossible. Communities are isolated, but communication has advanced to the point where short distances between people barely exist at all.

In Witchball, two players compete in a high speed foot-race while simultaneously playing a 2D pong-like ball game on the surface of the screen. Points are gained in both aspects and tallied per lap, so it’s important -- and tricky -- to manage the space better than the opponent.

Cineville Presents: How To Make A Monster

Thurs, Oct 31st 7:30PM

FREE!

In 2001, the modern day master of movie make-up, Stan Winston, produced a series of remakes of various American International Pictures “Creature Features” for Cinemax. One of which was a retelling of the 1958 B-movie classic, How To Make A Monster, written & directed by Robert Rodriguez’s best bud, George Huang.

Much like the original, a curtain is pulled back, the video game industry’s in this instance: Clayton Software’s EVILUTION is a bomb among focus testers, so a trio of “bad-ass mercenary programmers” are brought in to salvage the game before its release date. Clayton Software’s intern is added to the mix, because the developers have only a four week long window to create the scariest final boss imaginable. There’s also with a million-dollar bonus for the one dev who can do the job, so competition is stiff between the three. Tensions are especially high when lighting strikes the studio during a motion capture session, which seemingly wipes away everyone’s work… and this is before the mo-cap suit comes to life and goes on a killing spree.

Huang has the gaze of an outsider, yet his commentary on the world of video game develop has salient points nonetheless. A stellar cast further enhances the experience, which includes fan fave Clea DuVall and “Queen of the B-movies" (as well as 1993's “Penthouse Pet of the Year”) Julie Strain, who provides the requisite amount of nudity for a cheesy horror flick (remember, this was made for Cinemax). And yes, the monster in the movie pretty damn awesome (remember, Stan Winston was involved).

“It's hard to dislike a movie that turns on the incredibly cornball reveal that it's title isn't in reference to its shuffling, homicidal soundboard of an AI-generated computer frankenbeast that's terrorizing the other characters (who can be counted off on less than two full hands), but is in reference to what it takes to get to the top of the cutthroat games industry” - someone on Letterboxd

“People who are into video games; scary movies this is a great combination.” – someone on Amazon (who gave the movie five stars)

Jordan Romero (Record Release) with Don Teel Curtis

Nov 2nd 9PM

Online presale $7

Door $10

Jordan Romero record release show, with Don Teel Curtis and live visuals by Winston Case.

Jordan Romero, birthed in Frederick, MD, has been for the better part of a decade now living in and working out of Baltimore, MD, producing whatever genre or musical era he decides to melt down and recast. Often in his work you can hear a melodic kinship to girl groups like Baltimore’s own The Royalettes or even something like the rattling funk of Estonian producer Uku Kuut cooked up with the thump and sigh of Sylvia Robinson. But Romero rarely lets you get too comfortable with any reference you might think of; if you recognize something familiar in his music, it is inevitably altered and moved out of bounds. Romero’s songwriting is a changeling with a constant and unmistakeable heart and it would seem his uncanny magic is to maintain a dream state of classic cohesion amid a skillful disarray of generic form.

Don Teel Curtis’ music is something like long lost recordings from the board on an open mic night, or possibly standing between two bands sound checking. Many of the songs are likely to have multi-tracked guitars and vocals and some have been written for his mothers on mothers’ day.

Born in Amarillo, Texas to two mothers and a gentleman rancher, Curtis spent much of his childhood coping with insomnia and refusing to go to church or play baseball. One of his mothers taught him to play guitar at an early age, and he honed his skills performing covers of Melissa Etheridge, 4 Non Blondes, and Corona at the local gay bar, Sassy’s.

A joyous celebration of friendship... with art/performances by Airhead DC, Blessingsxx, Pen Palindrome, Sophie65, David V. Britton, DJ Meeshka, and Lu Rose.

Airhead DC’s live sets are typically a washing machine of warm envelopes of noise, crunchy bass, house rhythms, and Bollywood crooning-- but for this one you can look forward to a unique, first ever acoustic set.

Blessingsxx provides a set of song and poetry to help tern yer sensitivity settings up! Everything will be extraordinarily purple, temporal, and revealing of its anticapitalist predisposition from here on out. Pop/Electronic/Folk/Trans Non-Binary Sounds.

Pen Palindrome is the solo project of Virginia-native, Ava Mirzadegan. Her songs function as a sort of roadmap for finding joy while experiencing grief and anxiety. She creates folk-tinged indie rock that is earnest and a little melancholic. But if you asked her, she’d call it “ambient rock you can take home to meet your family.”

The project of Andrew Haas and Cooper Wright. Sophie65 creates a kind of cozy western folk via Brooklyn. Their sparing guitar playing and droning organs leave ample room for crooning worthy of any heartbreak.

David V Britton is all about atmosphere. Growing up in upstate New York and currently residing in Brooklyn, perhaps the most important quality to be found in his music is the center it finds around a feeling of space. His music is a reminder that the universe is mostly sweet and unencumbered distance, weaving a sonically palpable yet bodiless synthesis of existential anxiety.

DJ Meeshka is a Brooklyn-based DJ who likes to spin breezy R&B, party rap, hyper-pop, and bangers of all shapes and sizes. She believes in the healing properties of dancing.

Securing Email: Protecting Everyday Communications from GMail to ProtonMail

Nov 24 3:30PM

Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis:

$45 - Workshop Ticket

$30 - Reduced price Workshop Ticket (for queer and femme folks)

Class space is limited to 15 students! Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to reserve your seat and purchase your ticket.

You do not need to bring a laptop to class, but may want to do so to follow along with the exercises.

Wonderville in collaboration with the Tech Learning Collective presents: Securing Email: Protecting Everyday Communications from GMail to ProtonMail, a two-hour digital safety workshop that will demystify the nuance of email privacy and security.

As one of the oldest digital communication methods, email is used for everything from pointless chain letters to critical financial statements and legal actions. The name “e-mail” might make you think that electronic mail works the same way that writing a physical letter does, but this isn’t entirely true. From a technical perspective, it’s more like “e-postcards” because, just like sending a postcard through the postal service, anyone who handles your postcard can read what you wrote.

In the physical world, protecting your correspondence requires you to take the extra step of putting your letter inside an envelope and then sealing the envelope. That way, no one looking at the outside of the envelope can read what you wrote on the letter paper. To protect your email in the digital world, you still have to take this extra step of putting your letter inside a metaphorical envelope. Some services, like ProtonMail, claim to do this for you, but fail to do so in many common scenarios. Meanwhile, many people believe that just using Google’s GMail service means all your email content is always readable by Google, but this isn’t always true either.

This workshop will demystify the nuance of email privacy and security. By using freely available OpenPGP-compatible software, which has been availble since 1991, the Tech Learning Collective’s cybersecurity instructors will show you how you can keep your message contents private regardless of the email service provider you use. Never send paperwork with your social security number or other sensitive details on a digital postcard to your lawyer or accountant ever again!

As with all Tech Learning Collective events, racism, queerphobia, transphobia, sexism, “brogrammer,” “manarchist,” or any kind of similarly awful behavior will result in immediate removal from class without a refund. Please refer to our lightweight social rules for details on our strictly enforced no-tolerance policy against bigotry of any kind.

About the Tech Learning Collective

The Tech Learning Collective is an educational initiative run by radical queer and femme technologists offering unparalleled, low-cost computer classes primarily to marginalized groups and individuals who are politically engaged. Unlike coding bootcamps that focus on moving the highest number of students through rote task-completion for the goal of job placement, Tech Learning Collective teachers facilitate foundational skill building through Socratic discussion and kinetic, experience-based training. Cineville Presents: Resurrection of the Little Match Girl

Sept 30 @ 8PM
FREE!

Resurrection of the Little Match Girl is unquestionably one of the most ambitious examples of video game cinema, despite the “Matrix Style FX” sales pitch, lazily tacked on by distributors desperate to recoup even a tiny bit of their losses (more on that in a sec).

It’s the final film by Jang Sun-woo, a political dissident who spent time in jail for distributing anti-government literature; while behind bars, he came to the realization that making movies would be a far more effective means of spreading the truth. Fast forward several years and you have studio execs, high off the success of New Korean Cinema, going “why the hell not” with some art house hot shot’s idea for a video game movie based upon a Hans Christian Andersen poem.

Resurrection of the Little Match Girl is widely acknowledged to be the biggest production in the history of Korean cinema (spanning 4 years and 10,000 extras) and might still be (17 years later) its biggest bomb to date, one that single handedly killed Jang Sun-woo’s career as well three separate studios; Oldboy, released the following year, is the only thing that saved New Korean Cinema’s street cred. Sure you’ve seen a bad video game flick or two, but has any of them tapped into the Wachowski’s The Matrix, David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ, AND Wong Kar Wai's Fallen Angels simultaneously, PLUS had terrible K-pop?

"Finding out Resurrection of the Little Match Girl was made by Jang Sun-woo, was for me the theoretical equivalent of finding out Avengers: Infinity War was directed by Woody Allen." - https://cityonfire.com/resurrection-of-the-little-match-girl-2003-review/

"You know your film's great when one of your characters is Asian lesbian gunfu ninja master Lara Croft." - someone on Letterboxd
