Tor: What is it Good For? (Absolutely Everything!)

September 1st, 3:30-5:30 PM

This workshop features material from the Tech Learning Collective’s “Hacking with Mr. Robot” SEC101 course. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis:

* $45 - Workshop Ticket
* $30 - Reduced price Workshop Ticket for queer and femme folks

Class space is limited to 15 students! Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to reserve your seat and purchase your ticket.

You do not need to bring a laptop to class, but may want to do so to follow along with the exercises.

Wonderville NYC in collaboration with the Tech Learning Collective presents: "Tor: What is it Good For? (Absolutely Everything!)," a two-hour mini-intensive digital safety workshop focused on the Tor Project. Tor is a free, state-of-the-art, privacy-enhancing Web browser, SOCKS proxy, and anonymizing overlay mixnet. Don’t worry if you don’t know what these terms mean, that’s what the workshop is for!

From illegal online drug stores like Silk Road to DDoS botnet command and control headquarters, media attention has long painted “the Dark Web” as though nothing good can come of it. But learn just a little bit more about how Tor and “hidden services” work and you’ll find a treasure trove of valuable possibilities for day-to-day Internet use. The same technology that can hide the location of a drug ring can also serve as a free VPN-like service to protect your privacy while you browse the Internet, make censored websites available again, and even let you host your own Internet services for free, all without opening a single port on your firewall!

In this deep dive workshop on Tor, the Tech Learning Collective’s cybersecurity trainers will show you how to make the most of this widely available and free digital safety tool. They’ll demonstrate numerous Tor features such as Tor authentication, target service load balancing, and NAT-punching. In the process, you’ll finally understand—on a technical level—what the “Dark Web” actually is and how it works. Bring a laptop to class, and you’ll leave having run your own Dark Web site. Whether you’re a veteran black hat or a timid newbie, this class will shine a light on the Dark Web once and for all.

As with all Tech Learning Collective events, racism, queerphobia, transphobia, sexism, “brogrammer,” “manarchist,” or any kind of similarly awful behavior will result in immediate removal from class without a refund. Please refer to our lightweight social rules for details on our strictly enforced no-tolerance policy against bigotry of any kind.

About the Tech Learning Collective

The Tech Learning Collective is an educational initiative run by radical queer and femme technologists offering unparalleled, low-cost computer classes primarily to marginalized groups and individuals who are politically engaged. Unlike coding bootcamps that focus on moving the highest number of students through rote task-completion for the goal of job placement, Tech Learning Collective teachers facilitate foundational skill building through Socratic discussion and kinetic, experience-based training. Exploring Cyberspace: Network Sniffing and Scanning

September 15th, 3:30-5:30 PM

Wonderville

1186 Broadway Brooklyn NY 11221 United States

Tickets:

  • Workshop Ticket $45

  • Reduced price Workshop Ticket (for queer and femme folks) $30

Wonderville NYC in collaboration with the Tech Learning Collective presents: Exploring Cyberspace: Network Sniffing and Scanning, an adventure into the vastness of the Internet:

Have you ever wondered what’s between your computer and the websites you visit? Are you curious about where your messages actually go in order to get from here to there? Do you wonder what a map of computer networks really looks like? Come exploring with us as we embark on a journey into cyberspace, the final Final Frontier! In this beginner-friendly workshop, we’ll throw a metaphorical message in a bottle into the expanse of cyberspace, and learn how to sense and track its movement as it makes its way back to us—or not!

These are the voyages of frames, packets, and segments—our messages—as they make their way across the vast reaches of the Internet. On the way, they’ll encounter both friendly and unfriendly devices, such as routers, firewalls, traffic inspectors, or NAT tables. At each step of their journey, a complex series of decisions are made to determine where they’ll be routed to next, or if their journey is at an end. By using network mapping tools such as nmap along with digital wiretapping tools like Wireshark we can sense what happens on the far side of a network connection in much the same way as looking at the ripples on the surface of a river can tell us something about the shape of the riverbed.

Join us for a two-hour mission: to explore strange new networks, to seek out new devices and new organizations, to boldly go where only packets have gone before!

This workshop combines material from two Tech Learning Collective courses (NET101 and SEC101). Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis:

  • $45 - Workshop Ticket

  • $30 - Reduced price Workshop Ticket for queer and femme folks

Class space is limited to 15 students! Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to reserve your seat and purchase your ticket.

Trig For Games

Trig For Games

In this workshop, game designer and digital artists Andy Wallace will show you how to use some simple math to control enemy movement, visuals, and UI elements. No previous math skills necessary! Andy will guide you through the beautiful mathematical phenomena of sine and cosine waves and how simple trig functions can make your game look and feel slick with only a few lines of code. Workshop held at Wonderville.

This workshop will be taught in Processing, which is a free program language based on Java. Although no prior experience with Processing is necessary, it is recommended that you download it from processing.org and open it up the IDE before the workshop.

As this workshop focuses more on theory and universal mathematical principles, the code we’ll be writing will be relatively simple. Coders of all levels will be at home here. However, it is recommended that you have at least a small amount of programming experience in any language prior to attending this workshop.

You will need to bring your computer. If this creates a monetary burden that would prevent you from being able to attend the workshop, email andy@andymakes.com and I may be able to provide a laptop, but this will be extremely limited.

Andy Wallace is the creator of PARTICLE MACE, which can be played at Wonderville. More of his work can be seen at andymakes.com

Josie Carr (Pretty Hybrid)
Josie Carr is a Brooklyn, NYC - born producer, performing artist, engineer and adjunct professor (electronic music production) at NYU, Clive Davis. It was in Brooklyn, where she honed her musical and technical skills, while geeking out on technology, producing, writing and performing her hip hop project "Wan'B Like Me" under Josie Carr and with her live electronic, Latin band; Josie Carr La GATA Negra. It was these experiences that helped shape her sound and style and today continue to help her challenge the idea of only using conventional tools for making music. You can find her in her recording studio or performing live with a large array of controllers and softwares mixed with live instruments, as these have been her tools since her early days in Brooklyn and now have become her trademark. When asked about her greatest influences, Josie’s response is always: “Too many to name and enough to keep me humble and always creating.”

Trovarsi
Trovarsi is a LA based live performer, DJ, and producer that brings new, darker sounds to the world of electronic music. With a hybrid blend of analogue synths, drum machines, modular, and Ableton, she builds a pulsing atmosphere to any set she plays.

Born in the heart of Wisconsin, she pursued the music and culture of the underground. Growing up, techno and house was always on rotation and prominent DJs of the 90s such as Jeff Mills, Joey Beltram, Frankie Knuckles, Cajmere, Felix da Housecat, Miss Kittin and last but definitely not least The Belleville Three are some of her influences and continue to be a source of inspiration in her music. Found today in LA clubs delivering everything from pounding, bassy techno to house music that is equal parts technical and melodic, she strives to push the boundaries of electronic music.

Using the technique of blending hardware incorporated into Ableton, Trovarsi creates a beautiful hybrid blend of analogue and digital sounds. She has experience from studying Ableton with prominent producers and Ableton's own trainers, and these skills are taken onto the stage when she performs. The use of electronic software/midi combined with the raw sounds of drum machines and modular synths are just what make her music so captivating. Trovarsi’s vision for electronic music today is shaped and expanded further by the influences of electronic artists Steffi, Rebekah and Lady Starlight. In recent years Trovarsi has proven to be a talented contributor to the LA music scene.

Trovarsi is also a member of FORWARD (an electronic musician duo) as well as the founder of Transduction Signal on Fnoob Techno Radio, which showcases global DJs/artists as well as up-and-coming electronic artists.

July 21, 2019 3:30 PM –  5:30 PM

Tickets: https://withfriends.co/event/1958937

  • Workshop Ticket $45

  • Reduced price Workshop Ticket (for queer and femme folx) $30

Wonderville NYC in collaboration with the Tech Learning Collective presents: Gone Phishing: How to Recognize Fake Websites and Other Online Scams. This workshop, open to all, is a combination “attack/defense” exercise focusing on Web-based social engineering attacks. Participants will practice both how to launch their own attacks as well as how to defend against them:

Whether it’s corporate espionage, ransomware, or online fraud, most cyber attacks don’t start with sophisticated software exploits, but rather by employing relatively simple tricks. Thankfully, it’s easy to spot—and even to perform—these tricks if you have the right guidance. They’re called “phishing” attacks because, much like baiting a lure, they won’t work unless you bite.

For example, when you’re at a cafe and you ask the patron next to you to watch your belongings, your stuff will probably be safe when you return. But how safe would you feel if the patron at the next table turned to you and offered to watch your belongings when you next needed to use the restroom? If you had two different reactions to these scenarios, you already have the intuition you need to understand how the overwhelming majority of cybercrime gets a foothold inside your company, home, or organization’s network.

In this workshop, derived from a portion of the Tech Learning Collective’s popular “Hacking with Mr. Robot” Security 101 course, you will have the opportunity to create and deploy your own phishing Web site that can steal usernames and passwords from unsuspecting victims. By learning how attackers build pixel-perfect replicas of familiar sites like the Facebook login screen, you will also gain the skills you need to more quickly recognize the signs of a malicious web site, email, or other online scam.

Class space is limited to 25 students! Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to reserve your seat and purchase your ticket.

You do not need to bring a laptop to class, but may want to do so to follow along with the exercises.
