In 2016, Mr. Manns began to practice on the Pioneer CDJs at the Times Square and Union Square Guitar Centers. With the help of DJ Arbelo, he made his public debut at Candy Clement's Open Decks event. Digging his sound, Clement gave Mr. Manns an open invitation to play more sets - even to this day! Mr. Manns also played a variety of sets on House Music Radio Station, Bossa Nova Civic Club, Mercury Lounge, Private Party, Lot45, TiltBK, Pianos, Eris Evolution, and HalfMoonBk.

Cineville Presents: Resurrection of the Little Match Girl

Sept 30 @ 8PM
FREE!

Resurrection of the Little Match Girl is unquestionably one of the most ambitious examples of video game cinema, despite the “Matrix Style FX” sales pitch, lazily tacked on by distributors desperate to recoup even a tiny bit of their losses (more on that in a sec).

It’s the final film by Jang Sun-woo, a political dissident who spent time in jail for distributing anti-government literature; while behind bars, he came to the realization that making movies would be a far more effective means of spreading the truth. Fast forward several years and you have studio execs, high off the success of New Korean Cinema, going “why the hell not” with some art house hot shot’s idea for a video game movie based upon a Hans Christian Andersen poem.

Resurrection of the Little Match Girl is widely acknowledged to be the biggest production in the history of Korean cinema (spanning 4 years and 10,000 extras) and might still be (17 years later) its biggest bomb to date, one that single handedly killed Jang Sun-woo’s career as well three separate studios; Oldboy, released the following year, is the only thing that saved New Korean Cinema’s street cred. Sure you’ve seen a bad video game flick or two, but has any of them tapped into the Wachowski’s The Matrix, David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ, AND Wong Kar Wai's Fallen Angels simultaneously, PLUS had terrible K-pop?

"Finding out Resurrection of the Little Match Girl was made by Jang Sun-woo, was for me the theoretical equivalent of finding out Avengers: Infinity War was directed by Woody Allen." - https://cityonfire.com/resurrection-of-the-little-match-girl-2003-review/

"You know your film's great when one of your characters is Asian lesbian gunfu ninja master Lara Croft." - someone on Letterboxd

Exploring Cyberspace: Network Sniffing and Scanning

September 15th, 3:30-5:30 PM

Wonderville

1186 Broadway Brooklyn NY 11221 United States

Tickets:

  • Workshop Ticket $45

  • Reduced price Workshop Ticket (for queer and femme folks) $30

Wonderville NYC in collaboration with the Tech Learning Collective presents: Exploring Cyberspace: Network Sniffing and Scanning, an adventure into the vastness of the Internet:

Have you ever wondered what’s between your computer and the websites you visit? Are you curious about where your messages actually go in order to get from here to there? Do you wonder what a map of computer networks really looks like? Come exploring with us as we embark on a journey into cyberspace, the final Final Frontier! In this beginner-friendly workshop, we’ll throw a metaphorical message in a bottle into the expanse of cyberspace, and learn how to sense and track its movement as it makes its way back to us—or not!

These are the voyages of frames, packets, and segments—our messages—as they make their way across the vast reaches of the Internet. On the way, they’ll encounter both friendly and unfriendly devices, such as routers, firewalls, traffic inspectors, or NAT tables. At each step of their journey, a complex series of decisions are made to determine where they’ll be routed to next, or if their journey is at an end. By using network mapping tools such as nmap along with digital wiretapping tools like Wireshark we can sense what happens on the far side of a network connection in much the same way as looking at the ripples on the surface of a river can tell us something about the shape of the riverbed.

Join us for a two-hour mission: to explore strange new networks, to seek out new devices and new organizations, to boldly go where only packets have gone before!

This workshop combines material from two Tech Learning Collective courses (NET101 and SEC101). Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis:

  • $45 - Workshop Ticket

  • $30 - Reduced price Workshop Ticket for queer and femme folks

Class space is limited to 15 students! Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to reserve your seat and purchase your ticket.

You do not need to bring a laptop to class, but may want to do so to follow along with the exercises.

As with all Tech Learning Collective events, racism, queerphobia, transphobia, sexism, “brogrammer,” “manarchist,” or any kind of similarly awful behavior will result in immediate removal from class without a refund. Please refer to our lightweight social rules for details on our strictly enforced no-tolerance policy against bigotry of any kind.

About the Tech Learning Collective

The Tech Learning Collective is an educational initiative run by radical queer and femme technologists offering unparalleled, low-cost computer classes primarily to marginalized groups and individuals who are politically engaged. Unlike coding bootcamps that focus on moving the highest number of students through rote task-completion for the goal of job placement, Tech Learning Collective teachers facilitate foundational skill building through Socratic discussion and kinetic, experience-based training. Tor: What is it Good For? (Absolutely Everything!)

September 1st, 3:30-5:30 PM

This workshop features material from the Tech Learning Collective’s “Hacking with Mr. Robot” SEC101 course. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis:

* $45 - Workshop Ticket
* $30 - Reduced price Workshop Ticket for queer and femme folks

Class space is limited to 15 students! Please arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to reserve your seat and purchase your ticket.

You do not need to bring a laptop to class, but may want to do so to follow along with the exercises.

Wonderville NYC in collaboration with the Tech Learning Collective presents: "Tor: What is it Good For? (Absolutely Everything!)," a two-hour mini-intensive digital safety workshop focused on the Tor Project. Tor is a free, state-of-the-art, privacy-enhancing Web browser, SOCKS proxy, and anonymizing overlay mixnet. Don’t worry if you don’t know what these terms mean, that’s what the workshop is for!

From illegal online drug stores like Silk Road to DDoS botnet command and control headquarters, media attention has long painted “the Dark Web” as though nothing good can come of it. But learn just a little bit more about how Tor and “hidden services” work and you’ll find a treasure trove of valuable possibilities for day-to-day Internet use. The same technology that can hide the location of a drug ring can also serve as a free VPN-like service to protect your privacy while you browse the Internet, make censored websites available again, and even let you host your own Internet services for free, all without opening a single port on your firewall!

In this deep dive workshop on Tor, the Tech Learning Collective’s cybersecurity trainers will show you how to make the most of this widely available and free digital safety tool. They’ll demonstrate numerous Tor features such as Tor authentication, target service load balancing, and NAT-punching. In the process, you’ll finally understand—on a technical level—what the “Dark Web” actually is and how it works. Bring a laptop to class, and you’ll leave having run your own Dark Web site. Whether you’re a veteran black hat or a timid newbie, this class will shine a light on the Dark Web once and for all.

Cineville Presents: The Flying Luna Clipper

August 26th 8:30PM - 9:30PM

Produced almost entirely on a gaming PC! Discovered in a secondhand shop on LaserDisc! And screened for the first time outside of Japan! Maybe.

FREE!

"Take a trip on a chartered plane with a number of thrill-seekers (most of whom are anthropomorphic foods and animals). Found originally in a thrift shop on LaserDisc and ripped for online viewing, The Flying Luna Clipper is the only feature-length art piece/film created solely on the MSX2 system." - mubi.com

"The Flying Luna Clipper is the Finnegans Wake of movies-only-available-on-laserdisc.... A pre-post-vaporwave homage to the glory days of aviation" - someone on Reddit

"Pixel art interspersed with live action footage reminiscent of [Nobuhiko] Obayashi... Is it video art? Tech demo? Lengthy Sony ad?" - someone on Instagram

"Is [this] really what Snowmen dream of?" - someone on Letterboxd

Build and Destroy

August 25th 5PM or 7PM

Tickets: $12 ADV/ $15 Door (Entry to the venue will be free. Tickets are only for the play of Build and Destroy)

In a distant future, a generation ship carrying the remnants of civilization as we know it cruises through space on a course for Earth 2. During her passage through the pthelta quadrant a mysterious anomoly has paralyzed the ship's mega thrusters. Build up your space base to survive as the anomoly grows increasingly unstable. Race against the other teams to find an escape, sabotage or be sabotaged!

---------------------

In this game, players will build cities using ~2,000 kapla bricks. About the artists: Students from Mason Gross School of the Arts have teamed up with The Adventure Society to explore the intersection of game design and live performance. Join this beta test performance of Build and Destroy to see the culmination of their work.

Playtest Night

Playtest night is held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month at 7:30 at Wonderville

RSVP: https://withfriends.co/Event/2258005/Playtest_Night

Playtest night at Wonderville is a chance to help make the games of tomorrow by playing works-in-progress and providing feedback to developers. $5 donation encouraged.

Join us on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month! Setup will start at 7 and we’ll start playing at 7:30. Feel free to drop in after the start time; we can usually still get you some table space!

Have a game you’re working on? Want to get some testing and feedback? Bring your prototype to Wonderville! No game of your own but want to see what game designers in NYC are cooking up? The more testers the merrier!

Whether you started working on it last night or it’s one week from release, if you have a project or prototype you’d like to test, bring it to Playtest Night! Games can be analog, digital or anything in between. Nothing is too janky or too rough to be tested.

This is a low-key, casual event. There are no presentations. We’ll have tables setup and you can bring your game and play the games of other designers. There will be a member of Death By Audio Arcade present to help pair games and testers so don’t worry if you don’t know anybody. If you are showing a game, please be ready to also test other games and give them feedback.

Testers and designers of all experience levels are welcome. There is no wrong playtester and the best playtests involve people of all different backgrounds and abilities!

This event is free but your donations allow us to keep these event open to all members of the community. The bar will be open.
