Talks, Demos & Performances:
Dr. Michael Yatauro – Drumming and Data: A View Through the Lenses of Programming and Statistics
Many professional drummers have uniquely identifiable styles or “footprints”. Much of this comes from how the drummer plays along with the timing of notes, their so-called “groove”. Thanks to mathematics and modern technology, we can quantify how a drummer plays relative to “perfect” metronome time. We present how the data is generated for both metronome time and for the timing of notes played by drummers. We then compare these times and look for statistically relevant trends. For example, how tempo affects the outcome or comparing how a drummer plays a straight beat with how they play a fill.

Brian Bishop – Breath Activated Machines
Breath Choir is a live, audience-led performance where a room breathes together and that collective breath becomes both instrument and visualization. Breath Choir emerged from my work in two ITP courses: Biophilic Experiences, where it started as an exercise in umwelt (how to embody the experience of a rose), and Music Design and Discovery, where I built the engine that turns breath into sound. From there the question grew: what happens when a group can hear and see themselves breathing as one?

Elizabeth Kezia Widjaja – NO FOTO© - Altering Perception through Critical Flicker Fusion Frequency
Understanding the relationship between human critical flicker fusion, flickering light, and camera aliasing can unlock secrets. NO FOTO© explores how information can be hidden from or revealed to either human or machine perception. Using an LED matrix, the project plays with these phenomena to question the gap between what we see and what a camera captures.

Sophia Sobers – Ambient Ecology
A Sonic Pi live code performance constructing an evolving sound environment from synthesized tones, geophone recordings, and environmental field recordings. Drawing from her larger practice and her recent body of work, New Ecologies, which examines how digital systems translate and reconstruct nature, Sobers uses repetition, accumulation, and change to build and transform the composition in real time. The resulting work sits somewhere between an ambient landscape and an imagined ecology.

Robbie Lyman - Aliasing, Synthesizers and Integrals
A demo of the "Differentiated Polynomial Waveshapers" or "Polynomial Transition Region" approach to digital synthesis of classic analogue waveforms, which uses ideas that are mostly just from Calc I to great musical effect.
